Influence of the root tip and the duration of washing on k retention by excised apical root segments of corn.
Excised apical segments of corn root (Zea mays) (5-15 mm from the root cap), some with and some without the root tips (0-5 mm) attached, were washed for varying time periods up to 4 hours in 0.5 mm CaSO(4). After washing, tips were removed from those segments washed with tips attached, and then all segments and tips were analyzed for K(+) content. The root tips (0-5 mm) initially contained abou...
متن کاملPolar transport characteristics of radiostrontium and radiocalcium in isolated corn root segments.
In earlier reports from this laboratory radiocalciutm movement in the corn root was shown to be highly polarized basipetally, i.e., the direction of transport n,atural to the intact plant was preserved in the isolated root segment (2). For several reasons these polar transport characteristics also were consideredl to be representative quantitatively of stable element translocation by the root o...
متن کاملElectrical Correlates of Growth in Corn Roots *
All mature living organisms possess relatively constant potential differences ibetween any two points. To some extent, at least, these standing potential differences are a measure of an electrical reservoir, which may be called upon by the various organ systems during activity. They can be measured at all times during life and disappear upon death. They are arranged in characteristic patterns a...
متن کاملPotassium Stimulation of Corn Root Plasmalemma ATPase'
The stimulation by K+ of the initial rate of Hf-pumping by ATPase was studied in native plasmalemma (Zea mays L. var Mona) vesicles and in reconstituted vesicles with enzyme purified on a glycerol gradient. In reconstituted vesicles, a very high H+pumping rate (200,000% quenching per minute per milligram protein) was obtained with 9-amino-6-chloro-2-methoxyacridine provided that the pump was sh...
متن کاملSugar transport in isolated corn root protoplasts.
Isolated corn (Zea mays L.) root protoplasts were used to study sucrose and hexose uptake. It is found that glucose was preferentially taken up by the protoplasts over sucrose and other hexoses. Glucose uptake showed a biphasic dependence on external glucose concentration with saturable (K(m) of 7 millimolar) and linear components. In contrast, sucrose uptake only showed a linear kinetic curve....
